How to merge PDF files on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android

Updated October 18, 2026

Whether it's a contract and its annexes, a stack of scanned receipts or chapters of a report, you often need several PDFs as one file. Here's how to do it on every common device.

Any device: merge in your browser

The simplest method works the same on Windows, Mac, iPhone, iPad, Android and Chromebook:

  1. Open Merge PDF.
  2. Add your PDF files.
  3. Use the arrows to put them in order.
  4. Tap Merge PDFs and download the combined file.

The files are combined inside your browser, so they're never uploaded. That's important for contracts, medical letters and anything with personal details. Most online PDF sites upload your files to their servers to process them.

Mac: Preview

Open the first PDF in Preview and choose View → Thumbnails to show the sidebar. Drag the other PDF files from Finder into the sidebar, or drag individual page thumbnails between documents. Preview saves changes automatically, so duplicate the original first if you want to keep it unchanged.

You can also select several files in Finder, Control-click them and choose Quick Actions → Create PDF.

Windows

Windows doesn't include a tool to merge PDFs. Use the browser method above. It works in Edge, Chrome and Firefox and doesn't require installing anything.

iPhone and iPad

The Files app can combine files into a PDF: select them, open the More menu and choose Create PDF (menu names vary slightly between iOS versions). For control over the page order, the browser method above works in Safari too.

Android

Android doesn't have a built-in PDF merger. Open Merge PDF in Chrome, add the files from your Downloads or Drive, and download the result.

After merging

Why won't a file merge?

Password-protected (encrypted) PDFs usually can't be combined. Open the file in your PDF reader, remove the password if you're allowed to, save a copy, and try again.
