How to turn photos of documents into a clean PDF
Receipts, forms, homework, signed contracts: you often need to send paperwork as a PDF and you don't have a scanner. A phone camera works well if you follow a few simple steps.
1. Take good photos
- Light: daylight from a window is best. Avoid the phone's flash, which causes a bright glare spot.
- Angle: hold the phone directly above the page, parallel to it, so the text isn't distorted.
- Background: put the page on a dark, plain surface so its edges are easy to see and crop.
- Fill the frame: get close enough that the page fills most of the photo.
2. Crop and straighten
Use Crop Image to trim the table and background around each page. If a photo came out sideways, fix it with Rotate Image. Our PDF tool also applies your phone's orientation automatically, so most photos come out the right way up anyway.
3. Combine them into one PDF
Open JPG to PDF and add all the photos. Then:
- Use the arrows to put the pages in the right order.
- Choose A4 or US Letter if the PDF might be printed, or Fit to image for on-screen reading with no white borders.
- Click Create PDF.
Everything happens in your browser, so sensitive documents aren't uploaded anywhere.
4. Keep the file size reasonable
Phone photos are large, so a 10-page PDF can easily be 20–40 MB. Many email services cap attachments at around 20–25 MB, and upload portals are often stricter. To keep it small, compress the photos before making the PDF: compressing each page to about 300 KB keeps text readable and makes a 10-page PDF around 3 MB.
5. Add or fix pages later
- Forgot a page? Make a PDF of it and use Merge PDF to join the two files.
- Wrong order or a page upside down? Fix it with Organize PDF Pages.
- Only need to send some pages? Use Extract Pages from PDF.
Tip: name the file clearly
A file called 2026-10-lease-signed.pdf is far easier for you and the recipient to find later than IMG_4821.pdf.
