How to rotate a PDF permanently

Updated October 18, 2026

You open a scanned document, the pages are sideways, you click rotate in your PDF viewer, and it looks fine. Then you send it, and the recipient sees it sideways again. That's because most viewers only rotate your view of the file, not the file itself.

Rotate and save in your browser

  1. Open Rotate PDF and add the file.
  2. A thumbnail of every page appears. Click ⟳ or ⟲ on the pages that need turning, or use Rotate all if every page is wrong.
  3. Click Save PDF.

The rotation is written into the saved file, so it opens the right way up in every app, on every device. The pages are copied exactly, so text stays selectable and nothing is re-compressed. The file is processed in your browser and never uploaded.

Fix mixed documents in one go

Scans often have only a few wrong pages, like a landscape table in a portrait report. Because you can rotate each page individually, you can fix just those. You can also move pages and delete blank ones while you're there.

Rotating images before making a PDF

If you're creating a PDF from phone photos, it's easiest to make sure they're upright first. Rotate Image fixes photos one by one or in a batch, and our JPG to PDF tool also follows your phone's orientation data automatically.

Why do PDFs end up sideways?

Can I rotate just part of a page?

No. PDF rotation works on whole pages. To straighten something slightly crooked, such as a photo taken at an angle, rescan it or retake the photo with the camera held parallel to the page. Our guide to turning photos into a clean PDF has tips.
